In this book, the authors emphasize the
relations between the big adult and the little inner child, and note
that the former cannot ultimately rid itself of the influence of the
latter. However it can be worked with using role playing. More, on
p.161, they note that the individual must reflectively stand outside
dialogue, and should not identify with either the “big adult” or the
“little child.” (or, as Blatner would put it, the client or person must
identify with the meta-role).

(This and the next paper in my thinking refer to the differences in the
meta-role function between more and less explicit types of awareness,
whether an activity is "owned," identified with-- a "yes, I did indeed
think or do that" kind of registering, versus a muddying up of the
water, mixing a memory with an internal denial, as if saying, "No, I
never thought / did / that." It doesn't dis-own the action,
saying "the ego" or the "super-ego" or the defense mechanism did it,
but helps the client to recognize, "I disowned that action." )
